Monday Motivation

Many of us experience fatigue at the start of the week but feel great on the weekends. In other words, we lack Monday motivation. This mental fatigue is likely related to burnout at work. Counteracting burnout involves instilling a positive mindset every day and making the most of what you have. You’re more likely to experience burnout when you’re not being thankful for what you have. When you focus on the negatives in your life without appreciating the positives, work becomes more mundane, stressful and exhausting. This increases your chances of experiencing fatigue on Monday mornings and an eventual burnout.

Monday Motivation: Why We Hate The Start of The Week

We hate the start of the week because as human beings we dislike being put to work. We dread routines; waking up, putting on our work clothes and driving or taking public transportation to work. Furthermore, when we arrive at our job we also have to work under the direction of a supervisor or boss. Why do we hate all of this? Because it feels repetitive, day after day and week after week. Repetition does not bring us excitement and it makes us feel like we are stuck in a matrix. The problem is that many remain stuck in this matrix and never learn how to break free.

When you don’t like what you’re doing, this is when your chances of experiencing burnout increase. Burnout is a psychological syndrome caused by chronic interpersonal stressors in the workplace. The symptoms of burnout include an overwhelming exhaustion, feelings of cynicism, detachment from the job, a sense of ineffectiveness and a lack of accomplishment. The obvious risks from experiencing burnout is that you may quit your job, become depressed and start abusing substances. Believe it or not, one can experience burnout rather quickly; it doesn’t always take years to manifest.

The Solution to Mondays

Take one moment at a time and become as mentally present in the moment as you can. You can learn to become better at this by practicing mindfulness. This is a form of meditation that teaches you how to become nonjudgemental to your thoughts. It also helps you become present in the moment. When you get good at this, things don’t bother you as much; it’s as if you’re floating. This can come quite handy at the start of the week when you dread going into work. Rather than starting off the week in a negative mindset, mindfulness can help you start it off in a positive one. When you get good at consistently being positive, your chances of burnout go down. Mentally Drained By The Coronavirus

Another day passes by with no positive news to go to sleep with. We’re either isolated at home or going to work only to come back home to the same repetitive stories thrown at us by the media. At this point in time, our lives have changed for the worse; there is no debating it. The reality we once were accustomed to has completely vanished. We now are slowly starting to become mentally drained by the coronavirus.

It’s mentally draining to wake up every day and hear negative news on the media. They keep throwing numbers at us based on different models used by different organizations; it seems that no one model is consistent with another. They reported 240,000 deaths last week and now are saying, “may be less than originally reported.”

It’s mentally draining when every person you know is talking about the coronavirus; it’s like we have forgotten how to talk about other subjects. It’s been a couple of months now of talking about the coronavirus; how much longer are we going to keep mentioning it? The reality is that this may linger into the summer.

It’s mentally draining when your reality revolves around the coronavirus every single day. From the minute that you wake up to the second that you fall asleep, in some shape or form, this topic is on your mind. Can you imagine how disturbing this must be for psychiatric patients who constantly deal with internal battles?

It’s mentally draining when society continues to practice social distancing and you don’t see that many people on the streets. When you go to the grocery store nowadays, there are lines outside in order to prevent close proximity while shopping inside. The way people interact with you has also changed; they keep their distance when engaging with you like you’re somehow contaminated.

Losing patience in this situation is something that many of us are experiencing; you are not alone! How has your life been impacted by COVID-19?

Coronavirus vs. Cryptocurrency

Part of the fear of the coronavirus crisis is that people are becoming worried about their investments and life savings. This is understandable considering that financial stress can bring upon anxiety and even depression. As the coronavirus continues spreading, the stock and cryptocurrency markets will continue to decline. Is this a good time to invest?

First things first: do not panic. Remember that your mindset means more than anything. If you think negatively, then your reality will attract negative results. If you think positively, then no matter how much negativity is in the environment, you will continue to be protected. The moment that you start accepting this mentality is the moment that you will start to see a change for the better.

At the end of the day, you have to decide whether investing during these times is wise. If you have been reading my previous articles, then you know how important it is to develop the skill to listen and trust your intuition. Believe it or not, while intuition is natural, many of us ignore it quite often, resulting in mistakes in our relationships, work environment and everyday matters.

The Increasingly Poor Decisions We Make

I Am Not Okay With This

If someone looks you in the face and tells you that they don’t often make poor decisions, then count them in the lying club. We all make poor decisions whether we realize it or not. Obviously, it’s in your best interest to catch onto your poor decision-making and prevent future episodes. The increasingly poor decisions we make is most likely due to stress and societal pressure.

Stress contributes to poor decisions because it messes with our minds, especially when it’s uncontrolled. Remember that in the previous article, the most important factor that was touched upon in regards to combating stress is your mindset. Without a consistently positive mindset, stress balls will continue coming your way.

Societal pressure also contributes to the increasingly poor decisions we make on a weekly basis; some of you on a daily basis! Everyone has their own definition of societal pressure; what may be for me may not be for you. But overall, we can all agree that society is placing an emphasis on “how good you are:”

  • How much money do you make?
  • How good-looking are you?
  • How much education do you have?
  • Do you have an awesome social life?
  • Are you married and living it up?
  • Are you sending your children to an ivy league school?

Society is placing an emphasis on image and status; young people are especially affected by this. With all this pressure cooking up in the back of our minds, it’s no wonder why we slip and make poor decisions from time to time. We forget to stay on track and focus on what truly matters in life: being happy, healthy and not caring what others think.

And that’s how you should approach life from now on, if you’d like to avoid making poor decisions. Stop being distracted by what society expects from you, and start living your life on your terms; whatever makes you happy! When you start caring less about what others think of you, people will actually start caring more about you. It’s a paradoxical effect, but it makes perfect sense: others realize that you are doing you without caring and they’re attracted by that.

Regarding stress and societal pressure, tell yourself, “I am not okay with this” and start aiming to live your life on your terms.

Dodging Stress Balls

To consistently dodge stress balls requires a strong and effective mindset which you can consistently live by. Stress balls are a metaphor for objects of stress that come bouncing at you with no particular pattern at play. We experience stress balls almost every day to various degrees; the small ones we often shake off, but the bigger ones tend to make a larger impact on our state of mind. That’s why stress management is important.

Even with an awesome lifestyle at play, it’s very difficult to dodge stress balls. That’s because stress is part of life, no matter how easy you have it. Even people who are rich and casually relaxing on their yachts experience stress. Stress balls spread around in society like the coronavirus infecting humanity.

The difference is that the coronavirus will eventually go away, but stress will always remain around, attempting to put you down. What is stress? It’s a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. Sometimes no adverse circumstances are at play; we just become stressed because of unconscious conflicts stirring in the back of our mind.

So now that you agree that stress will always be around, how do we go about dealing with it? It always comes down to your mindset: are you an optimistic person who believes that the future will improve? Do you lean more toward the laid-back side of things, knowing how to avoid breakdowns, fights and arguments?

If yes to the above questions, then you already are in a great state of mind and fully-equipped to deal with everyday stress. But if you answered no, then you have some work ahead of you. Your mindset is the most important factor to defeating stress. That’s because stress acts like a virus, slowly infecting you and working overtime to replicate more stress balls within your system.

If your mindset (immune system) is not sturdy enough to defeat stress (virus), then it will bring you down over time. It’s not enough to exercise, eat healthy, have sex or even socialize. Your mindset is the most important determinant of your fight against stress. If you can consistently remain positive despite experiencing stress, then you will prevail.

Stress Headaches

When Tension Headaches Disrupt Your Day

Stress headaches, also known as tension headaches, are a type of headache that come about when you are experiencing stress, inadequate sleep or poor posture. They’re described as dull pain, tightness or pressure around your forehead or the back of your head and neck. Some describe it as a band squeezing their head.

Stress headaches are extremely common: there are about 3 million cases in the U.S. every year. They’re usually self-diagnosable, self-treatable and resolve within days to weeks. Treatments include pain relievers, ice or heat pads on sore muscles and good posture. But probably the most important factor is the alleviation of stress in your life.

Stress is defined as a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. When you experience stress, what most likely is occurring is increased myofascial pain sensitivity caused by sensitization of neurons in the supraspinal region.

In other words, stress is bad. And believe it or not, stress also increases your blood pressure and places a greater strain on your heart; it also increases your chances of developing a stroke. Tension headaches are actually very minor compared to what stress can do to your body in the long-term.

When you consistently experience stress headaches, then you know it’s time to make some adjustments to your daily routines. You have to identify what factors are stressful in your life and fix them. Maybe work is getting to you. Then try fixing something about your work, such as adjusting your pace or the way you approach work mentally.

Maybe you’re not getting enough exercise in your life. Exercise is a great source for the alleviation of stress: it helps you escape pressure and the demands of work and family life. It’s also very healthy and makes you feel great mentally, physically and emotionally. You cannot go wrong with exercise.

Maybe your sleep hygiene is slacking. Are you getting at least 8 hours of sleep a night? Yes, we all know that you’ve heard this one a thousand times, but how come you’re still not applying it? Sleep is crucial for a well-functioning brain! In order to feel less stress and perform more optimally, you need to treat yourself right with 8 hours of sleep per night.

By getting rid of stress, improving your sleep hygiene and posture and exercising at least 2-3 times a week, you will start to feel much better in many aspects of your life. You will also notice that your stress headaches will dissipate and you will start feeling great again! Start making the changes today.

Attacked By Pressure

Anxiety Due To Pressure

Pressure is the feeling of discomfort, worry and even fear. Many of us feel pressure on a daily basis: bills to pay, relationships to live up to, jobs to hold onto, material to study up on, expectations to maintain, etc. Pressure is a natural feeling that accompanies our everyday lives: it’s part of motivation and drive but can also be associated with anxiety and panic.

If not handled properly, pressure can quickly alter your state of mind for the worse. Uncontrolled pressure can easily chip away at your sanity by introducing daily stressors and discomforts into your life, eventually turning your once peaceful state of mind into an anxious cyclone. And when this tropical storm makes landfall, you better have a strong grip on your mind.

When confronted with anxiety, the last thing that you want to do is freak out. Freaking out is when you start overthinking about the source that brought you pressure in the first place. You don’t want to deal with your anxiety by confronting its source. It’s quite the opposite: you want to alleviate your anxiety by redirecting your mind onto pleasant thoughts or activities.

One example is exercise. Whenever you feel pressure, you can start to exercise; it does a great job at neutralizing anxiety. That’s why you can even start using exercise as a preventative measure: keeping away anxiety in the first place. Whenever you get into a solid exercise routine, you’ll start to feel less pressure or at least not react to it as intensely as you once did.

Meditation is another great tool for alleviating anxiety due to pressure. By being present in the moment and allowing all of your thoughts to swarm your mind uncontrollably, you remain non-judgmental and observant. By building upon this skill, you will become more resilient to pressure in real time.

Talking to someone who you can trust also helps a lot. The act of verbal communication by getting your thoughts out is very soothing and comforting; it actually alleviates pressure and prevents it from boiling up in the depths of your mind. Always have someone who you can call or meet up with to talk to about your life.

We’re all attacked by pressure; it’s not something uncommon that only occurs to a select few. Some of us are naturally more resilient to it, while others are more prone to experiencing a mental or emotional hit. The key is to never allow pressure to break you down. Breakdowns can lead to job loss, broken relationships and even psychiatric admissions.

Always remain one step ahead of pressure.

Let Your Mind Float

Loosen Your Mind

Do not take life too seriously; part of enjoying it involves letting go of your ego and rigid mindset and allowing yourself to just be. Loosening your mind will help relieve stress, pressure and pain; it feels good to just let your mind float.

Stress builds up because we are constantly bombarded with external stimuli, chores, problems to solve, relationship issues, etc. And stress slowly breaks us down like ice cracking away from winter salt. Learn to deal with life’s issues by loosening your mind: find a quiet place in nature or at home and just let your mind be; ignore the negativity and enjoy the present moment. Don’t worry so much!

Life is not meant to always be on the go. The more you learn to relax your mind, the easier life will become. No matter how difficult or competitive your job is, if you learn to let your mind float on a daily basis, you will surpass your competition because you will start to think more clearly and make better choices; a clear mind paves the way for easier streams of thought.

Loosening your mind does not mean “you’re slacking or being lazy.” It’s a technique that you can incorporate into your daily routine several times a day, in order to relax and appreciate the present moment, while still remaining motivated and determined to accomplish your goals. Loosening your mind is being smart!

The Beginning Of A Burnout Epidemic?

In 2019, the World Health Organization added burnout as a syndrome to the International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision (ICD-11) because of the rising rate of burnout experienced by individuals in the workforce. Burnout is described as: a syndrome resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.

Burnout Syndrome is characterized by three dimensions:

  • Feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion
  • Increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job
  • Reduced professional efficacy

Burnout is considered an occupational phenomenon and does not relate to experiences outside of the work environment; meaning, the definition does not apply to something like “I’m so over going to the beach on the weekends, I’m burned out.”

What is causing burnout and is it turning into an epidemic? I believe that the work-life balance of many individuals is tilted towards more work and not enough “life.” People do not seem to get as much pleasure from activities anymore.

Technology may play a role; we are so focused on iPads, iPhones, Samsungs and television that it is literally dulling us during our time off. By the time we come back from work the next day, the same process repeats; it’s as we never had any time off to enjoy in the last 24 hours.

The reality is that technology is not going to go away; it will keep improving, especially with artificial intelligence around the corner. Will society propose that AI take over our jobs, resulting in less work for us? This will be a devastation; no work and a life bombarded by technology will spell out a recipe for disaster.
