Having Patience With Mental Health Patients

Whether you are a loved one, friend, acquaintance or healthcare worker caring for a mental health patient, you’ll come to realize very quickly how the dynamic in the relationship is not consistent at all times; think of it as a love-hate relationship. That’s because we are humans and they are humans; in other words, our emotions fluctuate and our tolerance dissipates at times. On the other hand, mental illness is unpredictable and does not remain predictable day in and day out.

We have to learn how to maintain our composure with mental health patients because if we lose it, then sh*t will really hit the fan (pardon my Portuguese). This goes for anyone who is interacting with a patient in a meaningful way; you cannot lose your cool around them! At times, not only will the patient feel defeated but you will as well; this is when you retreat, wipe the sweat off your face, meditate and get back to it in a cool, calm and collected manner.

Mental health patients rely on us because they are temporarily at a disadvantage; their minds are malfunctioning and they cannot afford to have ours do the same. If you have a low frustration tolerance, then you should probably not be interacting with them in the first place. Patients need a supportive system because they lack support within their own selves.

At times you’ll feel like you hate your patients because they are not recovering and are doing just about everything under the sun to piss you off. They may not be compliant with their medications, curse at you or even attack you! Why in the world would you want to continue interacting with this human being who is putting your physical health at risk? Because you should care about them while reminding yourself that they are not in their right state of mind.

Other times you’ll love your patients because they are doing just about everything right under the sun. They are taking their medications, their symptoms are subsiding, they are nice to you and are showing consistent signs of improvement. Unfortunately, this does not happen all the time and you have to be prepared for the other side which frequently presents just as often. It’s a challenge treating mental health patients but the rewards can be amazing!

Remember that at the end of the day, mental health patients are not any less than us and we are not any better than them. Just because we maintain our sanity and they lose theirs, does not make us any better. We also cannot allow them to be lost to follow up, falling through the cracks into a mental health crisis, potentially resulting in suicide. We must remain united and help each other out at all times!

Practicing The Act Of Patience

Patience is the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble or suffering without getting angry or upset. There are many times in life when you cannot control yourself and make a mistake or get into an argument; this is because patience needs to be practiced.

The more that you practice the act of patience, the easier it will become to tolerate uncomfortable situations. Being able to withhold yourself in a situation that is being prolonged by another person requires maturity and strength. Sometimes we find ourselves in a situation where we must allow another person to set the flow and pace of the interaction.

If not an emergency, it is better to match the other person’s flow and work on your patience. Cutting an interaction short may come off as rude, disrespectful or disinterested. This can affect your reputation and your character. Rather, learn how to develop patience by listening to the other person and understanding what they are trying to communicate.

Anytime that you find yourself in a situation where you feel bored, inpatient or dissatisfied, remind yourself to practice the act of patience. There are many benefits which you can reap:

  • Patience improves coping with upsetting and stressful situations
  • Patience improves listening skills and empathy
  • Patience may help you become a better friend, neighbor and coworker
  • Patience increases your strength and stamina and helps you achieve your goals
  • Patience helps you more effectively tolerate irritability

Remind yourself that you are not the center of every interaction, regardless if you work a nine to five job or are a famous celebrity in Hollywood. We are all human beings who deserve respect, honesty and care. Therefore, be patient with yourself and others and provide an environment which fosters love and happiness.

Hard Work Beats Talent Every Time

Dedication, Hard Work Plus Patience

Without a strong work ethic, talent only gets you so far. But compared to others who are not so talented and do not have a great work ethic, talented people achieve more results. But people who work harder get even farther! This is because an excellent work ethic delivers results after much repetition; talent just makes things easier to a certain extent.

Do not rely only on your talent. For instance, if you have a child who is extremely talented in a sport, he or she needs to adopt a strong work ethic in order to maximum their potential. There are so many gifted athletes who are just as talented as your child and work very hard! Talent cannot be solely relied upon.

And the other way around also applies: no talent but a great work ethic is sometimes just not enough. But at least you know that you are giving it your all! There is no shame when you put in the work but cannot achieve the results that you desire, but shame starts to creep in when you do not give your best effort and start to fail in return!

The problem with just relying on talent is that it does not maximize your full potential. For instance, there are so many talented tennis juniors that bring a great game to the court. But if only they had a better work ethic and worked harder on and off the court, they would have a shot at playing for a division one school or maybe even the pros.

No matter what avenue you decide to take in life, remember to maximize your potential by instilling an excellent work ethic on top of your innate talent. And do not give up after working hard and not seeing the results you want; it takes dedication and patience to see the results pile in! When you start reaping results from all those long hours of hard work, it starts to feel bitter sweet and you obtain even more motivation and drive to work harder and climb up the ladder of success!
